What is breathlessness? Covid is once again hitting the headlines as the investigation into the handling of the pandemic and its sources continue. For some individuals though, Covid-19 never actually went away.
As we have discussed in previous articles on the subject, there are many symptoms of Long Covid, including fatigue, insomnia, pain as well as breathlessness. It is also important to remember that these symptoms can also be evidence of other health issues, so do ask your GP or healthcare support worker if you are concerned. In this article we are focusing on breathlessness. Firstly, let’s look at what constitutes breathlessness. We all get breathless at some time or another – racing up the stairs, running for the bus, playing sport or doing exercise. Being breathless after these kinds of activities is to be expected.
What is meant by breathlessness and how can we identify it?
Breathlessness is often associated as one of the key symptoms of Long Covid as well as other serious conditions such as heart or lung issues. How can we identify when being out of breath is a cause of something more serious rather than just physical exertion?

The NHS provides a list of criteria to check against when you feel breathless. Ask yourself these questions – do you feel breathless when you…
- walk up and down the stairs
- go out for a walk and have to stop to catch your breath
There are other signs associated with breathlessness as well such as:
- do you notice your shoulders going up and down as you breathe?
- are you finding yourself gripping or holding onto things tightly?
- do you have tightness in your chest?
