Why Covid patients will need oxygen weeks or even months after recovering
Saturday, September 4, 2021,11:50 am
As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, increasing number of patients who have survived the virus continue to battle the symptoms of the illness, long after they have clinically tested negative for the disease. As we hopefully begin to emerge from the pandemic, the challenge of managing the symptoms of Long Covid remains. Doctors say in the last wave about 15% of Covid-recovered patients needed to be put on long-term oxygen because of lung fibrosis. During the latest wave the numbers may be even higher.
If you have had Covid-19, but it was more than four weeks ago and you are still struggling to get back to full health, maybe you are one of the many Long Covid sufferers. Firstly, let’s look at what the symptoms are for Long Covid…
Symptoms for Long Covid
According to the NHS website, the symptoms displayed by people suffering from Long Covid can vary from fatigue and body aches to lung fibrosis. The following symptoms are the most common ones:
- extreme tiredness (fatigue)
- shortness of breath
- chest pain or tightness
- problems with memory and concentration (“brain fog”)
- difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
- heart palpitations
- dizziness
- pins and needles
- joint pain
- depression and anxiety
- tinnitus, earaches
- feeling sick, diarrhea, stomach aches, loss of appetite
- a high temperature, cough, headaches, sore throat, changes to sense of smell or taste
- rashes
Of course, these symptoms may also be indicative of different diseases and disorders, so if you are concerned you should consult your doctor.
You may have spoken to your doctor already and know you have Long Covid. If you are looking for ways to improve your respiratory function and energy levels, then do consider speaking to one of our friendly team at Pure O2. We pride ourselves on our high levels of customer satisfaction, with a policy of always listening to our customers and giving time and consideration to any questions or concerns.
How can Pure O2 help you with Long Covid?
Over the last few months we have supported many people suffering with the symptoms of Long Covid by supplying oxygen concentrators. These units have helped improve energy levels, reduce sleeping difficulties, reduce chest pain and of course help with shortness of breath. We are not suggesting that using oxygen is a complete cure but it certainly has been seen to help reduce the effects and help with recovery.
One oxygen concentrator which we particularly recommend for supporting those with Long Covid is the SimplyGo Mini – the smallest concentrator ever from Philips Respironics which offers powerful, pulse dose oxygen therapy in a package less than 5 lbs! The SimplyGo Mini has been hugely tested in real world environments — including impacts and temperatures — to deliver reliable performance day in and day out for all oxygen users.
The SimplyGo Mini portable oxygen concentrator (POC) has the ability to satisfy patients’ clinical and ambulatory lifestyle needs, whilst providing the ruggedness and reliability for all medical requirements.
At less than half the size and weight of any other Philips Respironics portable concentrator, the Simply Go Mini is the smallest and lightest ever developed. This portable device has the highest oxygen output for a POC weighing just five pounds or less, delivering nearly 20% more oxygen than the nearest competitive POC at comparable weights (when devices are operated at their maximum settings).
Providing two battery options. The standard battery, which provides typical duration of up to 4.5 hours; or the extended battery, with a duration of up to 9 hours, this brilliantly designed unit can offer longer periods away from any mains source.
The intuitive user interface is a LCD touch screen that is easy to use and read. A stylish case is comfortable for all patients to carry by hand, or over the shoulder, and for those patients who prefer a hands-free way to carry their POC, a specifically designed optional backpack can be purchased.
We also recommend the Philips SimplyGo Portable Oxygen Concentrator. The SimplyGo is the first portable oxygen concentrator to offer both continuous flow and pulse on demand mode whilst keeping a lightweight unit at 4.5kg.
This device is the only Portable Oxygen Concentrator of its size to offer both continuous air flow and pulse dose delivery in a single device. Covering 0.5-2lpm constant free flow and 1-6lpm pulse on demand, this particular unit covers many oxygen requirements for multiple oxygen users.
We also offer a range of Oxygen Measuring Devices, for example the Viamed oxygen finger meter which is a cost-effective way to monitor oxygen saturation levels and will help users to determine whether their oxygen levels are a problem.
