Oxygen on Holiday

Fit to Fly: How do you know if your oxygen levels are at a safe level to fly?

Fit to Fly? Since the events of the last couple of years you may associate the term ‘fit to fly’ with covid vaccinations and negative lateral flow tests.  When we use the term ‘fit to fly’ we are referring to how someone with breathing difficulties may cope with reduced oxygen in the aeroplane cabin.  Our team at Pure O2 has been helping COPD sufferers with travel arrangements when using portable oxygen concentrators for years. With our experience and knowledge we can ensure that all the arrangements are made with the airline to take and use oxygen on board your flight. However, before we start these discussions we need to check on your medical status.

How do I know if I am fit to fly?

When our friendly team at Pure O2 first speak with anyone enquiring about portable oxygen concentrators, we always ask about their doctor’s recommendations and for written confirmation of their condition.  This is all the more important when a customer is looking to fly.   Some people will have already discussed the possibility of flying with their consultant or doctor, but for those who have not we recommend asking for a Hypoxic Challenge Test or HCT.

Why should I take a Hypoxic Challenge Test?

A Hypoxic Challenge Test is a technique used to see how a patient might react during a flight with reduced oxygen levels.  At sea level the oxygen in the atmosphere is 21% whereas at altitude and in the pressure of the cabin it drops to about 15%.  For most this is not a problem, but if you already have low oxygen levels in your blood this can cause discomfort or illness during the flight.  If you know that the oxygen levels in your blood are low or you have breathing difficulties, then it is advisable to organise an HCT to establish how you may react in the aeroplane cabin at altitude.  The HCT is usually organised through your consultant.

What is a Hypoxic Challenge Test?

The HCT is sometimes conducted in a large cabin simulating the aeroplane environment with similar oxygen levels.  Alternatively it maybe conducted using a face mask to deliver the oxygen mix that would be experienced during a flight.  Whichever system is used your oxygen levels and heart rate will be monitored throughout the 20 minutes test.  Your health provider or consultant may take a small blood sample prior to the test and then again after the test to compare the levels of oxygen in your blood or a pulse oximeter maybe used.  You may also be given a physical examination and possible a walking test to check for breathlessness.  This will enable your medical advisor or consultant to advise you if additional oxygen will be required during your flight.

At Pure O2 we are regularly in contact with a variety of airlines to organise the use of portable oxygen concentrators whilst flying, as we have discussed in previous articles.  To find out more about using oxygen to enable you to be fit to fly and taking portable oxygen concentrators on board a flight contact us.
